Writing notes and ideas

I’ve been typing up my writing notes in the last few weeks – the notes from my fiction writing – because I don’t want to risk losing them all if the shipping gets damaged en route. It’s been fun, because some bits have brought the story ideas right back to life, and I’ve wanted to get on and write them, except that I don’t have time.

Ever since I started focusing on stats preparation rather than writing (around Christmas onwards) the ideas have been bubbling up, and I’ve often ended up thinking about one story or another, and scribbling down ideas so as not to lose them before I get a chance to work on them. It’s been slightly confusing, because often I’d have ideas for 3 or 4 of the stories I’m working on in as many days, with no particular focus.

I’d really like to have a bit of time to work on one or two of them once we get there, because when I was typing up the notes, there were all sorts of ideas in there from ages ago that I’d forgotten, some of which sparked even more ideas – for example, for one story I’d written a whole load of notes about the technologies and structure of the story universe, and after reading them through I had ideas for a lot more plot elements and scenes, etc. Admittedly, the plot is also now large enough to fill a series of about 10-15 graphic novels, so it’d take me a long time to get to some of the parts that I’ve already thought of. Grrr. Writing takes a lot of patience!

But once I’ve started the course, then I’ll be doing stats as my main occupation (instead of having a full time job) so then I can go back to writing as my main hobby, rather than filling the evenings with stats – so should be able to make some progress!

I’ve had a couple of requests to read stuff I’ve written (my mum, for one) but I don’t really feel comfortable with that – not even the ones that I submitted for the OU fiction writing course. It just feels like I’ve written stuff that I want to write, but I don’t think anyone else would want to read it, and wouldn’t really be interested in it if they did read it. So for now it’s all staying under wraps. And the graphic novel stuff won’t work until I can find someone to do the drawings, anyway.

A work colleague of mine recently wrote a play that got performed at his local theatre – I find that impressive. I’d love to achieve something like that. Right now, I’d be happy if I could complete about 1 book’s worth of any of my stories – but I think I’m proceeding with about 3 in parallel at the moment, so it’ll take a while to finish any one of them!
